AEPO-ARTIS Seminar "Performers’ Rights in the Acquis: Time for Refom?"

Every year, the representatives of the Association of European Performers' Organisations coordinate a seminar on performers' rights in the European and international context.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the latest important questions of interest concerning performers' rights and their administration at European and international levels. The seminar is open to AEPO-ARTIS members as well as to the representatives of the European Commission, European Parliament, the Council of Europe, government departments, WIPO, UNESCO, performers' organisations as well as other rightholders' and stakeholders' organisations.

With contributions from performers' organisations from different countries and European & International decision makers & organisations,  the seminar provides an opportunity to discuss performers' rights and their collective organisations in a large discussion forum.
The recent seminar took place in Brussels on 26-27 November 2007.

The themes of the various discussion panels were:

I. Impact of 15 years of performers' rights in EU legislation
- Impact of EU law on the effective protection of performers' rights: overview and practical examples
- The duration of protection of performers' rights: does the current term meet performers' needs?

II. Is EU law fit for new technologies?
- New uses, new rights?
- Who needs DRM?

III. EU policy for cultural industries and the creative sector

IV. Does the collective management of intellectual property rights need more/better regulation at EU level ?
- Good governance and licensing schemes for the collective management of rights across borders
