On 24-25 April, AEPO-ARTIS attended a two day conference entitled the “Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Copyright, Media and Creative Sectors” organised by the Polish Ministry of Culture, under the auspices of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
AEPO-ARTIS was delighted to accept the offer from the Polish Ministry to participate in the panel titled “AI in Collective Management Organizations”. The session was moderated by Krzysztof Wojciechowski of the Polish Copyright Commission and saw Nick Yule as representative of performer organisations aside representatives of authors’ associations from the music and audiovisual sectors: Tobias Holzmüller (GEMA), Maciej Janik (ZAIKS), and Dominik Skoczek (SFP-ZAPA), as well as Anita Huss-Ekerhult (IFRRO).
Putting focus on the role performers have in representing the human aspect in AI training AEPO-ARTIS emphasized that performers have distinct rights and have the right to opt-out too. Just like with authors, performers CMOs are indispensable in ensuring that performers are fairly remunerated.
Additional subjects covered included the ongoing GEMA litigation against Suno and OpenAI, the opt-out provisions contained in article 4 of the CDSM directive as well as various practical elements concerning how AI could be used by CMOs in their day-to-day activities.
The event provided an additional opportunity to have the voice of performers heard once more at a high-level Presidency conference and exchange with representatives of the Polish Ministry of Culture, WIPO, the European Commission, audiovisual streaming platforms and music producers and of course our local members.
On 28 March, a joint statement signed by a broad coalition of organisations from the creative sector was published to express opposition to the third draft of the European Union's General-Purpose AI (GPAI) Code of Practice.
